Daily Times Interview in Daily Times Boss(21-27 August) Part 2:
What steps are you taking to achieve your second goal i.e. enhance the country's economic growth?
Increasing exports has become my main focus now. For the last seven months, my company has been working on devising a system called the universal Pakistan export portal system, UPEP for short. It is aimed at the manufacturing sector. Any kind of manufacturer in Pakistan, whether surgical, sports or textiles, can register with it, allowing them to show their articles to an international market. International buyers can see the products and their specifications in detail, making using of the 3-D imaging provided by the portal. If they see something they like, they can place an order online at that very moment. This is going to be a major platform to enhance exports and I hope to involve senior members of all the chambers of commerce as well as the Export Promotion Bureau.
Currently, your operations are based in Lahore. Are you planning to expand any time soon?
We are planning to have a presence in Karachi and Islamabad very soon as well as in Dubai. I want to expand internationally as well, and will be opening a marketing office in London by the end of this month. New York and Kuala Lumpur will be the next destination of ABSM.
What do your consider the best part of your job?
I love the fact that every day brings with it a new challenge. I look forward to going to work because I don't know what exciting opportunity will be awaiting me. I also love working with different people all having the same ambition and all working towards the growth of the company.
How do you unwind?
When I was going up in the UK, I used to have a neighbor who played the electric guitar. I became besotted with it as a child and when he refused to teach me, I learnt on my own. I began to play a lot of rock n' roll and blues, even forming a band in Kent with two other guys, Even now, I take up the guitar whenever I am under stress and playing it helps me release tension.
What message would you like to give to youngsters who wish to follow in your footsteps?

I would like to tell anyone interested in taking up a career on IT that it is very important to keep abreast with the latest technology. Before you take up a course in IT, you should know what it is all about. The way to do that is to read a lot, look up the latest developments on the internet and attend any IT seminars you can, secondly, your heart should be into it. Don't do it for the money, do it only if you're passionate about it.
